Benign Mesothelioma

What is Benign Mesothelioma?

It is a non-cancerous tumor of the pleura.   The pleuron is the lining of the lung and chest cavity.  Benign varieties of mesothelioma are considered very rare since mesothelioma lays dormant before it exhibits any form of symptoms.  When asbestos particles build up in the lung or stomach lining, the thin membrane of cells surrounding the exterior of the internal organs tries to destroy the strange and foreign invader.  In some cases, the tumor that forms on these membranes press against the lungs or stomach, thereby inflicting extreme pain.  Fortunately, a benign tumor can be easily treated and remedied with surgery to remove the cancerous tissues.  However, there is but one complication involved in the surgery.  There is a possibility of pleural effusion. 

What is Pleural Effusion?

Pleural effusion is one complication with the surgery.  It happens when pleural fluid leaks into the cavity around the lung.   But then, it is not directly life threatening and it can easily be drained. 

Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors

Nonmalignant mesothelioma is generally a localized tumor.  This affects men more often than women.  When the tumor grows to a large size, it could compress the lung and cause shortness of breath.

What are Some Symptoms?

There are symptoms to nonmalignant mesothelioma.  This includes chronic cough, shortness of breath and chest pain, among others.  If you undergo a physical examination, you would find that your fingers would have a clubbed appearance to it.  Some tests that reveal nonmalignant mesothelioma are chest X ray, CT scan of the chest and an open lung biopsy.

Benign Mesothelioma is Non-cancerous

The tissue of a benign tumor is non-cancerous.  However, it does not mean that you leave it untreated.  It can still pose a threat to your health and well-being if you do not seek treatment for it.   Also, having nonmalignant mesothelioma can pinpoint other asbestos-related conditions.  Since it reveals significant asbestos exposure, some doctors use this as the launching point for an investigation to find out if a patient has other asbestos-related conditions.  That is why it is best to have it treated, so that the doctors can tell earlier on if you have any other conditions related to it, and have it treated.  

Treatment

You can have surgery to remove a solitary tumor.  Usually, the prognosis or expectations for this rare disorder is good given that you undergo prompt treatment.
