It is a rare disease.

Compared to other forms of cancer, mesothelioma does not occur very frequently. It is estimated that not more than 500 people suffer from this disease every year. The condition however can be fatal. It affects the membrane that coats many of the body’s internal organs. It usually affects the membrane over the lungs. It is also possible however for other membranes over other organs to be affected.

Exposure to asbestos is the greatest risk factor.

Contrary to what others believe, smoking is not the major risk factor of mesothelioma. The major risk factor is asbestos exposure. This is why those who have this disease are often those who have jobs that put them in close contact with asbestos. Without proper protection, asbestos can find its way to the lung membrane.

There are different types of the disease.

The second most common is peritoneal mesothelioma which affects the membrane of the abdominal cavity. Asbestos can find its way to the abdomen through accidental ingestion.
